Subterranian Termite
  • Live in underground colonies or moist secluded areas above ground
  • Size of colony differs among species (several thousand to several million termites can be in a colony)
  • Color and size depends on the termite’s role:
  • Workers and soldiers are 1/8 to 3/8 in; reproductives are 1 in.
  • Cream colored; soldiers have brown heads and powerful mandibles
  • Builds tunnels called mud tubes to reach food sources
  • Feed on products containing cellulose
  • Bite off extremely small fragments of wood
  • Swarm in the spring
  • Most destructive and most widespread type of termite
