American Cockroach  
 
  • Largest species of common cockroach ( 1.5 in. or larger)
  • Also known as the waterbug and palmetto bug
  • Reddish brown with a yellow margin behind the head
  • Considered one of the fastest running insects
  • Despite the name, it was introduced to the United States from Africa
  • Lives in warm, moist areas
  • Common in basements, crawl spaces, sewers, and crevices of porches and foundations
  • Feeds on decaying organic matter especially fermenting foods
