- Largest species of common cockroach ( 1.5 in. or larger)
- Also known as the waterbug and palmetto bug
- Reddish brown with a yellow margin behind the head
- Considered one of the fastest running insects
- Despite the name, it was introduced to the United States from Africa
- Lives in warm, moist areas
- Common in basements, crawl spaces, sewers, and crevices of porches and foundations
- Feeds on decaying organic matter especially fermenting foods
