- Dark reddish brown
- Very aggressive
- Feeds on plant or animal material
- Like moisture and build mound nests in soil near river banks, ponds, watered lawns, and highway edges
- Painful sting that often results in a raised welt that becomes a white pustule
- Can have as many as 250,000 workers in a colony
