  • Large (6-13 mm)
  • Typically black or a black/red combination
  • Build nest in dead, damp wood
  • Waist has one node and the thorax has an evenly rounded profile
  • Eat sources of protein and sugar such as insects and sweets
  • They do not eat wood although they remove wood as they create tunnels and nests
